saturday 12th march ran the 45km 6 foot trails race from katoomba to jenolan caves in 6hrs 53min 7secs just under the 7hour cutoff to get my first 6foot medal the sweepers were 100m behind me at 26km pluviometer (4hrs 09min) but on the shallower incline of black range i pulled away got to coxs crossing in 1hr51min but worked too hard and the 800m+ of elevation ascent in next 10k like climbing a mountain almost swept me to a dnf quads very sore last 2k 400m descent to finish rained a lot very ecstatic happy!!! To beat 7hrs and sweepers massive thanks to my wife kathryn mark bernadette jane cameron simone hunna and others for your help this weekend and earlier this year photos and more info later quads and calves brutally sore still on monday but no injuries or big blisters massive dream come true wanted this for 6 years yeah! Awesome effort TB!!
Looking forward to the detailed report
Good on you Jonathon! Nice to see your name there Sat night inside the 7 hours. Looking forward to the full details. Did you do a crouch start? First to the bottom of the stairs? Any falls? Swan dive into Cox's?
Im going to need 10hrs+ to write this one up, and if I run this brutal thing again, I will need better hills prep, maybe more mileage, and maybe bring out the crouch start at the front of the wave...but seriously the key as everyone keeps saying is getting through mini-saddle and pluvi well, with enough to attack black range hard. I was terrible at that section..., although I did get some good momentum going in black range, probably could have passed a whole lot more people than I did in that section...sweepers were so close I needed to pass as many as I could when I left pluvi at 26km...
Thanks to everyone who has been in touch about this race. Appreciated.
Ewen; all (well some) will be revealed in the fullness of time (hopefully in the coming weekend, although net access could be a bit dodgy)...but will answer first questions... Q1. no crouch start Q2. I passed a few people between the start and the stairs, but it was very dangerous/treachorous there, and being in wave 4 not possible. also started way too far back in wave 4, should have been quicker to get to front of wave when they called us up, one of my big mistakes for the day there...so mid pack certainly not first, although I am pleased with most of my first 15.5k...Q3. no falls at all, although I did do a very minor ankle twist, and plenty of scary moments, especially stairs at start and last 2km especially in the heavy rain !!!!! Q4. not sure I am familiar with the term swan dive...I did try to swim in the river, but it was too shallow, below waist deep, but above knees, I gave up on trying to swim it, after a few strokes...cold water felt good though...the river gravel in the shoes took a while to get out though...
altitude training tooo as Black range is 1200m, and the highest peak in Western Australia is about 1000m, so way above the altitude I'm used to running at...
